COT: Everything we thought we knew about St Patrick is wrong. Today is not his birthday, he didn’t have anything to do with leprechauns, he didn’t chase the snakes out of Ireland, he’s not known to have worn green, and he didn’t even drink green beer. He was a Catholic Bishop that was born in Scotland but had been kidnapped as a child by pirates and sold into slavery in Ireland. He escaped slavery due to a vision from God at age 16 and returned to Scotland to become a priest. He wanted to return to Ireland as a priest but many discouraged him since Ireland, at that time, was a dangerous place full of pagans. He decided to go anyway and ended up converting many of those pagans to Christianity, which is why he’s now recognized as the patron saint of Ireland. St. Patrick demonstrated strength and courage by returning to Ireland. As leaders we should try to demonstrate the same strength and courage in the face of difficult times, especially when others are telling us to retreat to safety and avoid dangerous situations.
Announcements: Everything is cancelled. Wash your hands, use sanitizer frequently, avoid sick people, and stay home if you’re feeling sick.
