To remember everyone deployed and to recall significant events of each
service branch.
1) Navy. Pearl Harbor, December 7th 1941. All battleships in port damaged
heavily or sunk. Up until that point, battleships most important vessel.
2,403 Americans killed. This thrust the US into WW II. Aircraft carriers
survived and became pivotal in the success of the Pacific campaign.
Today we have carrier operations of launching and trapping “aircraft”. PAX
run 100m, Run backwards 50m. Rinse/repeat.

2) Army. The 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment trained at Toccoa GA. What
became known as their motto was “Curahee”, thought to come the Cherokee
word “gurahiyi”, which means “We Stand Alone Together”. They went on to
jump into Normandy on D-Day and fought through to the end of VE. The
famous hill was 3 miles up, 3 miles down. Today we go 3 tiers up, 3 tiers
down on the Ant Hill, with 5-10-15 burpees at each terrace.

3) Coast Guard. Douglas Albert Munro was the only person to receive the
Medal of Honor in the Coast Guard. It was bestowed on him posthumously for
his selfless sacrifice in his actions at Guadalcanal, by using his Higgins
boat to act as a shield to extricate Marines. He also drew fire away from
them, saving many. He was shot in the base of the skull and lost
consciousness. He later awoke, asked “Did they get out?”, and then died.
At the bottom of the Ant Hill, we pair off in two’s, while one performs a
swimmer exercise, the other star jumps in front of the other PAX to
symbolize shielding another, star jumps for the Medal of Honor, and 22 reps
because he was 22 years old when he was killed.
4) Air Force. The F 86 Sabre was introduced during Korean War as an answer
to the MiG-15. Until then, propeller aircraft were used. The US was
taking it on the chin until this aircraft was unveiled. The AF maintained
a 10-1 kill ratio during this time. The AO became known as MiG alley.
The F86 was a swept wing aircraft. We performed IC 10 seal jacks and 10
“ejector” ins and outs.

5) One battle in particular, we are right in the middle of the 75th
anniversary. The battle of Iwo Jima occurred between 19 FEB through 26
MAR. This was one of the fiercest and bloodiest battles of the war for the
Marines. Out of 21,000 enemy soldiers, 216 were captured. The rest were
KIA or MIA. Some thought to escape in tunnels, but at the time the
Japanese were to fight to the death. This battle was meant to inflict
heavy casualties on the Americans, and the Japanese were heavily
entrenched. Today, we have a Marine Corps War Memorial in DC, where the
six Marines raised the US Flag on top of Mount Suribachi. 27 Medals of
Honor were awarded to Marines and Sailors. We bear crawl along the base
and up the side of the big hill, where our flag resides. We perform 27
burpees. *fact check-the 13th purported hand on the memorial is a myth.
